P&BS Disability Justice Working Group Mission and Values Statement

The P&BS Disability Justice Working Group aims to increase access and inclusion within P&BS by identifying barriers, developing solutions, sharing resources, and hosting learning opportunities and community building events. In addition, we aim to partner with other campus groups to increase access and inclusion beyond our department. Several core principles guide our work. First, we recognize that disability is an important aspect of human diversity, representing more than 25% of the population and encompassing a wide range of lived experiences. Second, we embrace a disability justice framework that recognizes the ways in which ableism amplifies and reinforces other forms of oppression. Third, we believe that we share a collective responsibility to create access proactively rather than reactively, and that access benefits everyone. Thus, we aim to design an environment within P&BS that proactively reduces access barriers, while also recognizing the importance of individual accommodations. Fourth, we embrace the disability rights principle that no decisions or policies should be made for a group without the full participation of its members. Thus, we seek out, listen to, and elevate the perspectives of disabled individuals within our community.
